Jessica S. Rutherford is the founder of Rutherford IP. With extensive experience in copyrights, trademarks, trade dress, trade secrets, rights of publicity, and media and entertainment law, she helps clients safeguard and maximize the value of their creative and commericial assets.

She regularly represents clients in disputes in federal and state courts across the country, as well as national and international arbitration proceedings. Ms. Rutherford also has experience managing a worldwide filing and enforcement program for a portfolio of famous marks and has won several appeals before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

In addition, Ms. Rutherford assists clients in capitalizing on the value of intellectual property rights, by identifying and evaluating opportunities and negotiating a wide range of intellectual property agreements. Her clients include brand management companies, apparel manufacturers and retailers, toy and game companies, software developers, financial service providers, food and beverage companies, restaurateurs, textile designers and manufacturers, fine artists, authors and publishers.

  • Before founding Rutherford IP, Jessica was a partner at Meister Seelig & Fein PLLC in the Intellectual Property and Commercial Litigation Groups. Prior to MSF, Jessica was a partner with Ferdinand IP Law Group and with Grimes & Battersby LLC, intellectual property boutique law firms.

    She previously honed her negotiation skills while working as a literary agent and foreign scout and as a subsidiary rights executive for book publishing companies, including HarperCollins and Henry Holt. Ms. Rutherford has parlayed this knowledge and experience into success for her clients, negotiating several multiple-book publishing deals on behalf of authors and artists, including in connection with a New York Times best-selling children’s book series.

    During law school, she interned with Southern District of New York Judge Deborah A. Batts. Ms. Rutherford has also worked for the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.

Beyond the Law

Outside of work, Jessica enjoys spending time with her family and pursuing her longtime passion—riding horses.
